Can You Play Oakmont on WGT by TopGolf? Here’s How

Oakmont is the angriest golf course in America, and WGT has it. The Church Pews bunker is there. The lightning-fast greens are there. The 200-plus bunkers that dot the property are there. The course has hosted more U.S. Opens than any other venue in the country, and on WGT, it plays exactly as hard as you expect.

WGT’s version is officially licensed. The routing is correct. The hazards are in the right places. The greens are the fastest in the WGT library. This is not a course you play to relax. This is a course you play to test yourself.

How Oakmont Plays on WGT

The Church Pews bunker between the 3rd and 4th holes is the most famous hazard in American golf. On WGT, the 12 parallel grass ridges are rendered well enough that you will feel the same despair you would feel in real life. The ridges are visible from the tee. You aim away from them. You still find them.

The greens are the other defining feature. Oakmont’s greens are the fastest in championship golf. On WGT, the green speed is noticeably higher than any other course in the library. Putts that look straight break six inches. Putts that look downhill run four feet past. You will three-putt from 20 feet. You will do it multiple times.

The bunkers are everywhere. Oakmont has more than 200 of them. WGT’s bunker physics make them punishing — the ball comes out lower and shorter, and getting up and down from a greenside bunker is a genuine achievement. The pot bunkers are deep enough that you cannot see the green from the bottom.

The Best Holes

The 1st: A 480-yard par 4 from the member tees. The fairway is narrow. The bunkers are visible from the tee. On WGT, the first tee shot sets the tone for the entire round. Hit it in the fairway or spend the rest of the round chasing bogey.

The 3rd — The Church Pews: The most famous hazard in American golf. On WGT, you see the full scope of it from the tee. The smart play is to lay up short. The fun play is to try to carry it. The smart play is the right play.

The 8th Hole: A 288-yard par 3 from the championship tees. Yes, a par 3 that plays driver. On WGT, the scale is correct. You hit a fairway metal and hope. The green is surrounded by bunkers and the putting surface slopes in ways that make a 6-foot putt feel like a 20-foot putt.

The 18th Hole: A 485-yard par 4 uphill with bunkers on both sides and a green that slopes back to front. On WGT, this is one of the hardest finishing holes in the library. You will hit a good approach and watch it roll off the front of the green. That is Oakmont.

How It Compares

GSPro’s BigFudge version is more detailed in the green contours and bunker shaping. The Church Pews look more menacing on GSPro. But WGT’s version is licensed, which means the course data is official. The routing is correct. The greens are authentically fast.

Trackman’s version is the most physically accurate, but Trackman costs $29,490. WGT costs $10 a month.

For the price, WGT’s Oakmont is a brutal, accurate, and worthwhile experience. It is not the prettiest version of Oakmont available. But it is the most accessible, and the course beats you up just as thoroughly as the expensive versions.

The Bottom Line

Oakmont on WGT is the cheapest way to play one of the hardest courses in America on a simulator. The Church Pews, the lightning greens, the closing stretch — all of it is there and all of it is hard. If you want to test your game without spending $30,000 on a Trackman, pay $3 and play Oakmont. See if you can break 90.
