Can You Play Kiawah Island Ocean Course on WGT by TopGolf? Here’s How

Kiawah Island Ocean Course is the course that made Rory McIlroy cry. The 2012 PGA Championship at Kiawah was a bloodbath. McIlroy started the final round with a three-shot lead and shot 75. The wind was 25 mph. The fairways were narrow. The rough was thick. And the closing stretch along the Atlantic Ocean was unrelenting.

On WGT, Kiawah is officially licensed. The oceanfront routing is accurate. The wind matters. The closing holes along the Atlantic are as hard as they should be.

How Kiawah Plays on WGT

The wind is the course. Kiawah is a Pete Dye design built on a barrier island where every hole is exposed to the Atlantic breeze. WGT’s wind model handles this well — the 17th hole plays differently based on wind direction, the club selection changes throughout the round, and the ball moves in the air the way it should.

The course is also brutally long — 7,800 yards from the tips. On WGT, the fairways are generous by championship standards because Pete Dye knew the wind was hard enough. The challenge comes from the approach shots into the wind. You will hit a lot of long irons into greens that are small and surrounded by bunkers.

The dunes are the other visual feature. Kiawah is built on massive sand dunes, and the elevation changes are significant. WGT’s engine handles these well enough that the uneven lies affect your shot. You will hit approach shots from stances that feel wrong, and the ball will come out differently because of it.

The Best Holes

The 2nd: The par 5 along the ocean. A 550-yard hole where the second shot is the hardest decision on the course. On WGT, the wind affects every scenario. Go for it and risk the wind. Lay up and leave a long wedge. Both options are hard.

The 14th: The par 3 over water. A 200-yard carry to a green surrounded by bunkers. On WGT, this hole is a genuine test. The wind matters. The carry matters. The green is small.

The 17th: The ocean hole. A 430-yard par 4 directly along the Atlantic. On WGT, this is the highlight of the round. The ocean is on your left. The wind is in your face. The fairway is narrow. The green is small.

The 18th: The closer. A 500-yard par 4 with the clubhouse in the background. On WGT, you will stand on the 18th tee, exhausted from 17 holes of wind and sand, and realize the course is not done with you yet.

How It Compares

The visual quality is a generation behind the newer courses in the WGT library. Kiawah was scanned earlier and the textures show it compared to something like Pinehurst No. 2 or Fields Ranch. But the gameplay holds up.

GSPro’s community versions are more detailed in the dune rendering and green contours. Trackman’s version is the most physically accurate. But WGT’s version is licensed, the routing is correct, and the wind matters. For $10 a month, that is a good deal.

The Bottom Line

Kiawah Island Ocean Course on WGT is a must-play wind test. The ocean holes along the Atlantic are among the best sim experiences on any budget platform. Play it with 15 mph wind from the tips. Try to break 90. You will not enjoy it. That is the point.
