The Players

Fourteen LPGA stars have committed. The list looks like a major championship leaderboard:

Celine Boutier, Brooke Henderson, Charley Hull (the most entertaining golfer alive, full stop), Danielle Kang, Megan Khang, Lydia Ko (Hall of Famer at 29), Andrea Lee, Minjee Lee, Jeeno Thitikul (former World No. 1 at 21), Lexi Thompson, Albane Valenzuela, Michelle Wie West, Lottie Woad, and Rose Zhang (won her first two pro starts — that’s not a typo).

The Cities

Four teams confirmed:

• Atlanta — Arthur Blank’s backyard. The Falcons owner knows live sports production.
• Los Angeles — Celebrity capital. Home of content.
• New York — Biggest media market in the world.
• Detroit — Motor City Golf Club is the official name. The branding pays homage to Detroit’s auto heritage while signaling a fresh take on women’s pro golf.

Arthur Blank and Alexis Ohanian (Reddit co-founder, Angel City FC owner) are the first ownership group at roughly $20 million per team. Ohanian’s involvement is the signal that matters most — he doesn’t invest in toys. He invests in properties. WTGL is a standalone league, not a TGL marketing stunt.

How It Works

Same format as TGL. Teams of three or four players compete in a 15-match season at SoFi Center. Each match is a combination of alternate-shot (called “Triples”) and head-to-head (“Singles”) play on a virtual course rendered on a 64x46ft simulator screen.

There’s a shot clock. There’s the “Hammer” — a rule that lets a team double the point value of a hole once per match. It’s chaos, it’s fast, and it works on television in a way that regulation golf sometimes doesn’t.

The technology is the same as TGL: Full Swing KIT launch monitors, a custom-designed virtual course library, and a putting green that’s separate from the sim screen because putting in sim golf is still the weirdest part of the experience (the tech is getting better, year over year).
