The Short Answer
Colonial on GSPro — Fort Worth's Charles Schwab Challenge host with infamous Horrible Horseshoe. LIDAR captures tree-lined fairways and small greens.
Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth is the longest-running host of the same PGA Tour event in history. The Charles Schwab Challenge has been played at Colonial since 1946, and the course has the kind of history that only comes from seven decades of Tour golf. Ben Hogan called it home. Ben Hogan’s plaque is on the 6th tee. The course is named after Hogan at every turn.
On GSPro, Colonial is available as a LIDAR community build. It is one of the better private club LIDAR conversions because the course has been in the public eye for so long that the data is well-sourced.
Finding Colonial on GSPro
Search for “Colonial” in the GSPro course database. The LIDAR version references the Fort Worth course specifically.
The LIDAR Quality
Colonial is a tree-lined course on the banks of the Trinity River. The LIDAR data in the fairways and greens is strong because the course is maintained to Tour standards, but the tree cover creates gaps in the peripheral areas.
The course’s famous green contours are the key to the design. Colonial does not have the length to challenge modern players. The defense is the green complexes, which are small, elevated, and severely contoured. The LIDAR captures the elevated nature of the greens and the sloping that makes them so difficult to hold.
The Horrible Horseshoe
Colonial is famous for “The Horrible Horseshoe,” holes 3 through 5 that curve around the Trinity River.
The 3rd hole is a long par-4 that plays into the prevailing wind with water left. The 4th hole is a par-3 over water to a green tucked against the river. The 5th hole is a par-4 that runs along the river with a green that slopes toward the water.
On GSPro, the Horseshoe plays exactly as punishing as it does on Tour. The wind direction matters. The carry distances are accurate. The penalty for being short on 4 or left on 5 is a wet golf ball.
The Hogan Legacy
The 6th hole at Colonial is a 408-yard par-4 that was Ben Hogan’s favorite hole in golf. It requires a fade off the tee and a precise approach to an elevated green. On GSPro, the hole plays exactly the way Hogan described it – a fair test that rewards the correct shot shape.
Verdict
Colonial on GSPro is a strong LIDAR build of a historic Tour course. The green complexes are the standout feature, and the Horrible Horseshoe is as punishing in the sim as it is on TV.
