Caledonia is the best course in Myrtle Beach. The statement is not controversial. Mike Strantz’s first solo design sits on a former rice plantation along the Waccamaw River, and it combines Southern charm with architectural ambition in a way that no other course on the Grand Strand approaches.

Strantz built Caledonia in 1994 on land that had been a working rice plantation for two hundred years. He kept the oak trees, the rice fields, and the plantation house, and he routed the course through the natural landscape. On GSPro, the LIDAR community build captures the unexpected contours and the bold green complexes that define a Strantz course.

The LIDAR Quality

Caledonia is flat by the standards of a Strantz course. The elevation changes are subtle because the course sits on old plantation land. The LIDAR picks up the subtle movements in the terrain, the creeks and ponds, and the dramatic green complexes that are the defining feature of the course.

The course is heavily treed with live oaks draped in Spanish moss. The tree canopy creates some gaps in the LIDAR coverage on the fairways, but the greens and the water hazards are clean and accurate.

How It Plays

Caledonia is a thinking course. The fairways are generous but the angles matter, and the greens are the most aggressive in Myrtle Beach. Strantz built bold contours into the putting surfaces, and the LIDAR captures the ridges and the fall-offs that make three-putting a constant threat.

The front nine is the scenic nine that winds through the plantation grounds. The 1st hole is a par-5 that requires a precise tee shot through a chute of oaks. The 4th hole is a par-3 that plays over water to a green protected by a false front.

The back nine is more open but more exposed to the water. The 10th hole is a par-4 that plays along the Waccamaw River. The 13th hole is a par-4 that requires a carry over water to a narrow green. The 15th hole is a par-3 that plays over water to a green that tilts hard from back to front.

The 18th hole is one of the best finishing holes in the Carolinas. It is a par-5 that plays back toward the plantation house with water in play on the second shot. The green is set below the clubhouse, and the walk up the hill is as memorable as the shot.

What You Miss

The real Caledonia is an atmospheric masterpiece. The Spanish moss, the plantation house, the live oaks, the river, the bar on the veranda – none of that transfers. What transfers is the shot values and the green complexes, which are the best in Myrtle Beach.

Verdict

Caledonia on GSPro is a strong LIDAR build of Mike Strantz’s first masterpiece. The greens are the star of the show, and the risk-reward options on the back nine are among the best on the platform.
