The Toptracer Global Challenge is live. Day 2. People are hitting shots at 1,450 ranges in 38 countries, and the machines at Royal Birkdale are already running.
Twenty simulators are scattered across the championship grounds. Ten are in the Swing Zone offering free 15-minute lessons to anyone who walks up. Five more sit at the HSBC Golf Zone. Two at Dunes House. One at the Patrons Pavilion, one at the Mastercard Club, and one in the Player Clubhouse. That adds up to the largest deployment of simulators at any Open Championship in history.
The competition itself is simpler than anything you will see on the course this week. Walk into any Toptracer-equipped range. Pick Royal Birkdale’s par-3 15th hole. Hit three shots. Your closest to the pin goes on a global leaderboard. The winner gets two Sunday tickets to The 155th Open at St Andrews in 2027 and a round on the Old Course the next day.
There is no registration, no entry fee, and you do not need a launch monitor. You need a bucket of balls and a Toptracer bay.
The 15th Is the Whole Show
The R&A and Toptracer picked the right hole. The 15th at Royal Birkdale is 241 yards from the back tees. It is the longest par-3 on the course, with a narrow entrance, a green that looks smaller than it plays, and wind exposure that makes club selection a gamble. The R&A built this hole on the site of the old 14th as part of a broader 2026 redesign that also reworked the 5th, shortened the 7th to a par-3, adjusted the 18th tee, and cut the bunker count from 127 to 108. The course now plays 7,223 yards at par 70.
The 15th will decide the championship this weekend. If you can stuff one inside six feet from 241 yards, you have earned the right to flex on a global leaderboard.
The Activation Is the Real Story
The simulators on the grounds serve a strategic purpose. Toptracer is using this week to prove that ball-tracing technology is the new normal at major championships. Fans walking through the Spectator Village can scan a QR code on any tee box during practice rounds and get real-time ball speed, carry distance, launch angle, spin, and curve for every shot they watch. This is broadcast-level telemetry on your phone, from the ground.
The 15-minute golf lessons in the Swing Zone are the smartest part of the activation. Toptracer is putting a club in the hands of people who have never touched a simulator. The company has 45 million hours played on its platform in 2025, and it is using the biggest week in golf to convert curious spectators into regular range-goers.
GOLF+ VR Players Are in the Game Too
If you cannot get to a Toptracer range, you have another option. GOLF+ VR launched Royal Birkdale on July 8 complete with championship branding, grandstands, and spectator areas. The VR Open runs July 16-22 inside the GOLF+ TOUR, and the grand prize is the same caliber of trip to St Andrews in 2027.
The GOLF+ version of Royal Birkdale is worth playing regardless of the prize. The course is modeled in full 3D using drone footage and satellite data. You stand on the tee box with real depth perception, which changes how you judge elevation and distance. Our full GOLF+ VR review covers the details. It is the best virtual golf experience money can buy, and it is not a launch monitor.
What This Means for Sim Sports
Two platforms are running parallel global competitions on the same course during the same week as the actual major. One is a range technology company with 1,450 locations. The other is a VR game developer. The R&A signed off on both.
The governing bodies are treating virtual golf as a legitimate extension of the sport. The distribution networks already exist. The prizes are getting good enough that people are paying attention. Every person who plays Royal Birkdale on a Toptracer range this week and thinks about building a home sim is a potential customer for the products we review here.
How to Play
Find your nearest Toptracer Range at toptracer.com. The Global Challenge runs through July 19. Hit the 15th hole with three shots per session. The closest to the pin wins.
If you own a Meta Quest headset, fire up GOLF+ and play Royal Birkdale through the VR Open. The competition runs July 16-22.
Either way, you are playing the same course that will decide the 154th Open champion. A year ago that was not an option. Go hit some.
