Old Head on GSPro is the most visually dramatic round of golf you can play in simulation. The course sits on a narrow peninsula that juts into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of County Cork, with 360-degree ocean views from almost every hole. There are courses with more history, more design pedigree, and more rankings. There is no course with a more dramatic setting. Ranked 62nd on the Golf Digest World Top 100, Old Head is the bucket-list course that delivers exactly what the postcard promises: ocean carries, cliffside fairways, and approach shots that look like they are flying off the edge of the world.

The Old Head Experience

Old Head of Kinsale was designed by Eddie Hackett, John O’Hagan, and Paddy Merrigan and opened in 1997. The course occupies a narrow promontory that was the site of a World War II naval signal station, and every hole either plays along the cliffs, across the cliffs, or directly toward the ocean. The GSPro LiDAR build captures the defining feature of Old Head: the ocean is visible from every hole. Not in the background. In the frame. The 2nd hole is a 345-yard par 4 that plays along the cliff edge with the ocean on your right. The 4th is a 150-yard par 3 that plays directly over the ocean to a green sitting on the next point of the peninsula. The 12th is a 535-yard par 5 that plays along the western cliffs with the ocean on your left and carries that require forced commitment. The signature hole is the 16th, a 185-yard par 3 that plays across a natural chasm to a green set on the farthest point of the peninsula. The carry is all over the ocean, and in GSPro, the depth perception challenge is severe. The ocean backdrop provides no frame of reference, and the green looks smaller than it is. Club up, trust the carry, and hope the wind does not shift mid-swing.

Quality Assessment

The LiDAR data for Old Head captures the extreme coastal topography accurately. The cliffs, the chasms, the narrow peninsula routing — all are present. The elevation changes are significant: several holes play from clifftop tees 80 feet above the ocean. The green complexes at Old Head are modern and accessible. They are larger than traditional links greens, with less severe internal contouring. The challenge comes from the approach: hitting a green that is surrounded by ocean on two or three sides with wind coming from every direction requires precise distance control. The visual quality is surprisingly good for a community build. The ocean rendering, the cliff textures, and the skyline views are well executed. This is one of the most visually impressive courses in the GSPro library, even at community build standards. The one critique: the course is expensive in the real world (around $400 per round), and a vocal minority of critics argue it is a resort course disguised as a links. In simulation, that criticism does not matter. The course plays exactly as advertised: dramatic, fun, and unforgettable.

How to Access Old Head on GSPro

Old Head of Kinsale is available as a free community-built course on the GSPro course server. Search for “Old Head,” “Old Head Kinsale,” or “Old Head of Kinsale” in the SGT course library. No Patreon subscription is required. Download it through the GSPro client course manager. It will appear under O in your course library.

Old Head vs Other Coastal Courses in GSPro

Old Head sits in a class of one in the GSPro library. Pebble Beach has six oceanfront holes. Old Head has 18. Cape Wickham has 11 oceanfront holes on a remote Australian island. Old Head has 14 on a narrow peninsula. Pacific Dunes has coastal views. Old Head has forced carries over the ocean. For the player who wants the most dramatic cliffside experience in simulation, Old Head is the answer. It is not the most strategic course. It is not the most subtle. It is the most spectacular, and sometimes that is exactly what you need.

FAQ

Is Old Head available on GSPro?

Yes. Old Head of Kinsale in County Cork, Ireland is available as a free community-built course on the GSPro course server.

How realistic is Old Head on GSPro?

The LiDAR elevation data accurately captures the extreme coastal topography and cliffside holes. The ocean carries and chasm approaches are faithfully reproduced. Visual quality is high for a community build.

Can I play Old Head on other simulator software?

Old Head is primarily available on GSPro. It is not currently available on E6 Connect, FSX Play, or Trackman Performance.

How many oceanfront holes does Old Head have?

Old Head has ocean views from every hole and forced ocean carries on at least 14 holes. The 4th, 5th, 11th, 12th, and 16th all require carries over the ocean or across ocean chasms.

What wind setting should I use for Old Head?

Set wind to Medium. The course is so exposed that high wind makes the ocean carries unplayable. Medium wind provides drama without making the forced carries a lottery.

How do I download Old Head on GSPro?

Open the GSPro course server, search “Old Head of Kinsale,” and click download. It appears under O in your course library. No additional subscription required.
