The Short Answer
Forest Dunes is Tom Weiskopf's Michigan masterpiece through the Huron National Forest. Here is how the LIDAR community build plays on GSPro.
Forest Dunes is the course Tom Weiskopf called his best design, and he designed a lot of good ones. Sitting in the Huron National Forest in northern Michigan, the course routes through a forest of red pine, oak, and maple, weaving between wetlands and sand dunes that predate the trees. It is a pure golf experience that rewards every shot in the bag.
On GSPro, Forest Dunes is available as a LIDAR community build. It is a strong conversion of a course that deserves to be better known outside of Michigan.

The LIDAR Quality
The challenge with Forest Dunes is the tree cover. The course runs through dense forest, and LIDAR data in heavy tree cover can be inconsistent. The fairways and greens are clear, but the edges of the corridors and the secondary rough suffer from the canopy gaps.
The terrain under the trees is what makes Forest Dunes special. The course sits on a sand dune system that creates natural elevation changes and dramatic fairway contours. The LIDAR captures the underlying dunes well because the sand is visible in the waste areas and the open spaces.
How It Plays
Forest Dunes is a shot-maker’s course. The fairways are tight, the trees frame every hole, and the green complexes are Weiskopf’s signature – large, undulating, and strategically bunkered.
The par-5 14th hole is the standout. It plays downhill to a valley, then back up to a green set against the forest. The second shot decision – go for the green or lay up – is the defining moment of the round.
The par-3s are exceptional. The 8th hole plays over a wetland to a green that slopes from back to front. The 17th hole plays downhill to a green protected by a massive bunker complex. Both holes test your ability to control trajectory and distance.
The course also has a reversible loop option called “The Loop,” which is a separate Weiskopf design that can be played clockwise or counter-clockwise. If you see it in the GSPro database, download that too.
Verdict
Forest Dunes on GSPro is a strong LIDAR build of one of the best courses in the Midwest. The tree cover creates some gaps in the scan, but the essential character of the course is preserved. The shot values are excellent, the variety of holes is outstanding, and the course rewards intelligent play over pure power.
