Aronimink was renovated by Gil Hanse in preparation for the 2018 PGA Championship — the renovation restored Ross’s original green contours, removed tree corridors that had grown in over the years, and opened up the sightlines that make this course special.

The fairways are generous, the green complexes are the defense, and the course asks you to shape shots into pins tucked behind bunkers. This is classic Ross strategy — the options are visible, the decisions are yours, and the penalties are fair.

Quality Assessment

The GSPro LIDAR build of Aronimink is clean. The Hanse restoration opened up the course significantly, which means the LIDAR scan picks up the fairway contours and green positions without obstruction. The green complexes — Ross’s signature raised greens with false fronts and internal contouring — read accurately in the physics.

The standout holes are the par-3s — Ross designed four distinct one-shot holes at Aronimink, each requiring a different club and a different shape. The 245-yard fifth plays downhill. The 190-yard eighth plays over water. The 200-yard 14th is all carry to a raised green. The 185-yard 17th plays into the prevailing wind. The LIDAR build handles all four correctly.

The visual presentation is standard LIDAR community quality. Aronimink sits in the Philadelphia suburbs with fairways carved through mature hardwood forest. The generic tree placement does not capture the specific character, but the architecture is strong enough to carry the experience.
