On Trackman, Whistling Straits is an officially licensed LIDAR build. The Lake Michigan shoreline is rendered with professional-grade data. The dunes are massive. The fescue is blowing in the wind. The bunkers are everywhere. It is one of the most visually dramatic courses in the Trackman library.

Why Whistling Straits Works on Trackman

The Lake Michigan setting is the star. The course runs along the shoreline, with holes that play right up to the edge of the lake. The wind comes off the water. The fescue is everywhere. The dunes are massive. On Trackman, the LIDAR data captures the elevation changes that make the course so distinctive. The 17th hole, a par 3 that plays along the lake with a massive dune in the background, is one of the best single holes in the entire Trackman library.

The bunkers are the other headline. With over 1,000 of them, you are never more than a few yards from sand. Trackman’s LIDAR data captures the depth and shape of every bunker. The pot bunkers are deep enough that you cannot see the green from the bottom. The fairway bunkers are positioned to catch the perfect drive that lands one yard offline. The greenside bunkers are deep, steep, and designed to make you wish you had hit the green.

Trackman’s radar physics engine handles the wind correctly. Whistling Straits is a Lake Michigan course, and the wind is the defining feature. The wind comes off the lake, hits the dunes, and swirls unpredictably. On Trackman, the wind model captures this. The ball moves in the air exactly as it should. The fescue rough affects spin and launch angle based on actual lie data from the LIDAR scan. A ball sitting down in the fescue produces a different shot than a ball sitting up. How to Access It

Open Trackman Virtual Golf. Navigate to the course library. Search “Whistling Straits.” The Straits Course is the championship layout. The Irish Course (the second Pete Dye design at the resort) is also available.

Load it from the championship tees. Set wind to 15 mph minimum. Set conditions to firm and fast. You will find at least one bunker. Probably more. Accept that now.

The Holes That Define the Round

The 10th Hole — The Par 4 along the Lake: The back nine opens with the lake on your left. The fairway is generous. The green is reachable. But the view is what makes this hole — the water, the dunes, the sense that you are playing somewhere that looks like Scotland but costs less to get to. On Trackman, the wind coming off the lake affects every shot. The approach plays longer than the yardage because the wind is in your face.

The 17th Hole — The Par 3 by the Water: 220 yards from the tips with the lake on the right and a massive dune in the background. The green is protected by bunkers. The wind is in your face. On Trackman, this is one of the best par 3s in the entire library. The LIDAR data captures the dune behind the green. The wind calculation makes the club selection a genuine puzzle. Hit a hybrid, hold your breath, and watch.

The 18th Hole — The Closer: A 500-yard par 4 with the clubhouse in the background. Yes, a 500-yard par 4. It is the hardest road hole on the course. The fairway is tight. The bunkers are everywhere. The approach is to a green that is guarded by water on the left. On Trackman, you will stand on the 18th tee, exhausted from 17 holes of wind and sand, and realize the course is not done with you yet.

How It Compares to Other Versions

GSPro has community builds of Whistling Straits that are excellent. The Lake Michigan views are rendered well. The bunkers are numerous. The course is one of the most visually dramatic in the GSPro library.

Trackman’s version is professionally licensed. The LIDAR data is higher resolution. The bunker depths are more accurate. The wind physics are more granular.

The difference is most noticeable on the bunkers. On GSPro, the bunkers are present but the depth is approximated. On Trackman, every bunker depth comes from the actual course data. The pot bunkers are deep enough that you genuinely cannot see the green. The escape shot is as hard as it should be. If you are using Whistling Straits as a training tool to prepare for a real round, Trackman gives you a more accurate answer. If you just want to enjoy the views and hit some shots, GSPro is perfectly adequate.
