Can You Play Whistling Straits on FSX Play? Here’s How
Whistling Straits on FSX Play is the best-looking version of this course on any platform. The Pete Dye masterpiece on Lake Michigan is a visual spectacle — dramatic lake views, thousands of bunkers, fescue-covered dunes, and greens that make no sense until you realize Dye designed them to be unfair.
FSX Play’s 4K LIDAR rendering captures the rugged terrain perfectly. The lake is rendered with proper wave patterns. The bunkers — all 1,000 of them — are individually shaped. The fescue rough is deep and unpredictable.
The Straits vs. The Irish
The Straits is the championship course. It has hosted three PGA Championships and the 2020 Ryder Cup. The course plays along the Lake Michigan shoreline with constant wind, fescue everywhere, and greens that are among the most demanding in American golf. On FSX Play, this is a must-play course for anyone who wants to test their game against a major championship venue.
The Irish is the companion course. Shorter, gentler, more playable. Think of it as the warm-up to the Straits. It is still a good course on FSX Play, but it is not the reason you buy Whistling Straits.
If you buy one, buy the Straits. It is the reason Whistling Straits is famous.
Why FSX Play’s Version Is the Best
The FSX Play version of Whistling Straits benefits from the same visual engine that makes Pebble Beach and St Andrews look spectacular. The Lake Michigan shoreline is rendered with the same water quality that makes FSX Play’s ocean holes so impressive. The fescue dunes have the right color and texture. The bunkers are individually modeled instead of being generic sand shapes.
The greens are the real test. Pete Dye designed the Straits greens to be absurdly difficult — severe slopes, false fronts, collection areas that make a simple two-putt feel like an achievement. FSX Play’s LIDAR data captures these contours with higher resolution than any community-built version. You will three-putt from 15 feet and blame the course. That is the correct reaction. Dye intended it.
The wind matters at Whistling Straits more than almost any other inland course. The lake generates constant wind that shifts direction throughout the day. FSX Play’s weather engine handles this correctly — the wind on the 18th hole plays differently than the wind on the 5th hole because the terrain and lake proximity change.
How to Access It
Buy the Straits course from the Foresight online store. $40-60. Receive a license key. Activate it in FSX Play. Download and play.
Set firm conditions and tournament wind. The Straits at firm conditions with 15 mph wind from the lake is the closest thing to a Ryder Cup setup you can simulate in your garage.
The Bottom Line
Whistling Straits on FSX Play is one of the best course purchases you can make on the platform. The visual quality is outstanding. The greens are a genuine test. The lake views are spectacular.
If you own a Foresight system, this is a top-three course purchase recommendation alongside Pebble Beach and St Andrews.
