Royal Lytham on FSX Play is the premium licensed version of the most punishing course on the Open rota, and it is the only sim version that correctly captures the brutality of the 200-plus bunkers. If you want a friendly round of sim golf where you admire the scenery, pick something else. Royal Lytham exists to wreck your scorecard.

The FSX Play version of Lytham is the professional-grade alternative to the GSPro community build. It costs more. It looks better. And it is just as mean.

The Royal Lytham Experience in FSX Play

Royal Lytham St Annes ranks 48th on the Golf Digest World Top 100. It has no ocean views, no dramatic cliffside holes, and no natural amphitheaters. It sits inland, behind a residential area, hidden by railway lines and dune ridges. And it destroys scores through brute-force design.

The FSX Play version uses Foresight’s professional LIDAR capture to render the course’s brutal truth: a sequence of punishing par 4s that never let up. The stretch from 11 through 15 includes five of the hardest par 4s in championship golf. The 11th (the railway hole, 562 yards from the tips), the 12th (444 yards with bunkers that swallow your approach), and the 14th (453 yards with a dogleg that demands a carry over a dune ridge) – these play in FSX Play exactly as they do in the Open.

The defining feature of Lytham is the bunkers. Over 200 of them. The FSX Play version positions the cross-bunkers at the 300-yard landing zone, the greenside pot bunkers that require explosion shots from knee-deep sand, and the fairway bunkers that sit exactly where you want to hit your second shot. The sand physics in FSX Play are punishing enough that you will think twice before going for a par-5 green in two.

The single most important bunker to know is the one short-right of the 18th green. David Duval found it in 2001, tried to play a miracle shot, and made triple. The FSX Play version places it in the same spot, and the sand physics will punish you for getting aggressive. Lay up to the center of the green and take your par.

How to Access Royal Lytham on FSX Play

Royal Lytham is available as a paid course through the Foresight Sports online store. It is compatible with both FSX 2020 and FSX Play – if you already own the FSX 2020 version, you can download the FSX Play version at no additional cost.

The course requires a compatible Foresight launch monitor (GC2, GC3, GC3S, GCQuad, QuadMAX, Falcon, GCHawk, or Launch Pro) and a Windows PC. Pricing is standard for FSX Play famous courses at $50-80. Check the Foresight store for current pricing and potential bundle discounts.

Quality Assessment

The LIDAR data for Royal Lytham is solid. The elevation changes are subtle but meaningful – the 1st hole plays uphill into the prevailing wind, while the 18th plays downhill toward the clubhouse with the railway on your left. The green contours are accurate, and the greens are small, which is the primary scoring challenge.

The bunker rendering is where the FSX Play version earns its price. The 200-plus bunkers are individually modeled with proper depth, lip texture, and sand color. The cross-bunkers at the 300-yard landing zone are visible from the tee, which is critical for the course’s strategic challenge. The greenside pot bunkers look like they are waiting to ruin your round.

The visual quality is the best available for this course. The residential area, the railway line, and the Lytham Green are all rendered with Foresight’s typical attention to detail. The course does not have dramatic coastal scenery to showcase, but the quality of the rendering makes the inland setting feel authentic.

The one area where FSX Play cannot match the real course is the rough. At real Lytham, the rough is knee-deep gorse and dune grass that makes finding your ball a charity event. The FSX Play rough penalty is severe, but it cannot replicate the sheer frustration of hacking out sideways from vegetation that has not been cut since the Jurassic period. Crank up the rough penalty in settings if you want the genuine Lytham experience.

How FSX Play Royal Lytham Compares to Other Platforms

Royal Lytham is available on GSPro (free community build) and FSX Play (paid licensed course). The FSX Play version has professional LIDAR capture, better graphics, and the official Foresight support channel. The GSPro version is free and has the same bunker placement but lower visual quality.

The choice between the two versions comes down to your hardware and budget. If you already own a Foresight launch monitor and FSX Play, the FSX Play version is the better visual experience. If you own a GSPro-compatible launch monitor, the free version is excellent and the bunker placement is accurate enough that the gameplay difference is minimal.

Royal Lytham is not available on E6 Connect, Trackman Performance, or WGT.

FAQ

Is Royal Lytham available on FSX Play?

Yes. Royal Lytham St Annes is available as a paid, licensed course through the Foresight Sports online store. It is compatible with both FSX 2020 and FSX Play.

How much does Royal Lytham cost on FSX Play?

The course is priced at $50-80, depending on current promotions. If you already own the FSX 2020 version, the FSX Play upgrade is included at no additional cost.

How realistic is Royal Lytham on FSX Play?

The professional LIDAR capture accurately renders the subtle elevation changes, all 200-plus bunkers, and the small green complexes. The sand physics are punishing. The rough penalty is severe but cannot match real knee-deep gorse.

Which version of Royal Lytham looks the most realistic?

FSX Play has the best visual quality. The professional LIDAR capture produces sharper textures, better bunker depth rendering, and more accurate green contours than the GSPro community build.

Can I play Royal Lytham on other simulator software?

Royal Lytham is also available on GSPro as a free community build. It is not available on E6 Connect, Trackman Performance, or WGT.

What is the hardest hole on Royal Lytham in FSX Play?

The 11th (the railway hole) plays 562 yards from the championship tees and is widely considered the hardest par 5 in Open golf. In FSX Play, with a crosswind, it plays as a three-shot hole for most players, and the bunker short-right of the green punishes any aggressive approach.

What wind setting should I use for Royal Lytham on FSX Play?

Set wind to Medium-High. Lytham is partially protected by dunes and residential areas, but the closing stretch of 16-18 is exposed to crosswinds that make club selection a guessing game.

How do I buy Royal Lytham on FSX Play?

Visit the Foresight Sports online store, search for “Royal Lytham,” purchase the license key, and activate it in the FSX Play software. The course will appear in your library immediately.
