Castle Stuart on GSPro: Modern Highlands Masterpiece
Castle Stuart Golf Links, the modern Highlands course that hosted the Scottish Open for six years, brings its coastal drama to GSPro. Here is the quality assessment and how to access it.
Castle Stuart on GSPro — the modern Highlands links in simulation. Course quality, access, and why the Moray Firth views make it a must-play.
The Short Answer
Castle Stuart on GSPro — the modern Highlands links in simulation. Course quality, access, and why the Moray Firth views make it a must-play.
Castle Stuart on GSPro is proof that modern links design can stand next to the classics. Built in 2009 by Mark Parsinen and Gil Hanse, Castle Stuart jumped onto the Golf Digest World Top 100 at 55th overall by doing one thing exceptionally well: building a course that looks like it has been there for centuries while incorporating modern design precision.
The GSPro community build captures the Highlands setting that made Castle Stuart a Scottish Open venue from 2011 to 2016, and it is one of the best modern courses you can play in simulation.
The Castle Stuart Experience
Castle Stuart sits on the Moray Firth, northeast of Inverness, on a property that features a genuine 17th-century castle ruin and some of the most dramatic coastal topography in the Scottish Highlands. Gil Hanse looked at the site and decided to build a course that routed along the coastline, using the natural dune ridges and the ocean views as the primary design elements.
The GSPro LiDAR build captures the routing that makes Castle Stuart special. The course opens with a gentle par 4 along the coast, then climbs up onto the dune ridge for the 2nd hole, which offers panoramic views of the Moray Firth. The 3rd hole, a 410-yard par 4 that plays along the clifftop with the castle ruins in the background, is the first moment where you realize this is not a typical modern course.
The 6th through 8th stretch is the heart of the course. The 6th is a 560-yard par 5 that plays along the coast with the beach on your left. The 7th is a 175-yard par 3 that plays from an elevated tee to a green set against the sea. The 8th is a 420-yard par 4 that doglegs around a dune ridge. In GSPro, this three-hole stretch is as good as anything in the Open rota, and the ocean backdrop makes depth perception a genuine challenge on approach shots.
Quality Assessment
The LiDAR data for Castle Stuart is excellent, particularly for the coastal holes and the dune ridges. The course was built on relatively untouched land, which means the natural topography is dramatic and the LiDAR captures it faithfully.
The green complexes at Castle Stuart are modern in the best sense. They are large, undulating, and positioned to accept approaches from the correct angle while rejecting shots from the wrong angle. The 10th green, which sits on a natural shelf with the castle ruins behind it, is the best example. Approach shots from the left side funnel toward the pin. Approach shots from the right side feed off the green. In GSPro, this creates the kind of strategic depth that separates great courses from good ones.
Bunkering at Castle Stuart is restrained but effective. There are fewer than 60 bunkers on the course, and they are positioned to catch shots at specific yardages rather than to frame the hole visually. The fairway bunkers sit at 280-300 yards off the tee — exactly where the aggressive driver finds them.

Castle Stuart vs Other Modern Links in GSPro
Castle Stuart occupies a rare space in the GSPro library: it is a modern links that does not feel modern. Unlike some contemporary designs that rely on length and difficulty, Castle Stuart plays at around 7,000 yards and uses the natural topography and wind as its primary defense. It feels like a classic links that happened to open in 2009.
If you have played the Bandon courses on GSPro and want something in a similar vein — coastal, dune-based, and routing-driven — Castle Stuart is an excellent addition. It is also a good companion course to Cruden Bay — both are Scottish courses that are not on the Open rota, both are top-60 world courses, and both offer the kind of coastal links experience that most sim golfers miss when they focus on the famous names.
FAQ
Is Castle Stuart available on GSPro?
Yes. Castle Stuart Golf Links near Inverness, Scotland is available as a free community-built course on the GSPro course server.
How realistic is Castle Stuart on GSPro?
The LiDAR elevation data accurately captures the coastal topography and dune ridges. The green complexes reflect the strategic modern design. Castle ruins and Moray Firth views are simplified but recognizable.
Can I play Castle Stuart on other simulator software?
Castle Stuart is primarily available on GSPro. It is not currently available as a licensed course on E6 Connect, FSX Play, or Trackman Performance.
What makes Castle Stuart different from the Open rota courses?
Castle Stuart is a modern design that incorporates classic links principles. It is more forgiving off the tee than courses like Carnoustie but demands more strategic approach play. The coastal views are among the best in the GSPro library.
What wind setting should I use for Castle Stuart?
Set wind to Medium. Castle Stuart sits on the Moray Firth and is partially protected by dune ridges, but the coastal holes are exposed. Medium wind provides the most balanced test across the full routing.
How do I download Castle Stuart on GSPro?
